"Hodge’s abstract works deal with ‘being’ through exploration of synesthesia- the human body and its ability to experience sound , colour and emotion in a blurred, interconnected way. Metaphysical and esoteric, Hodge’s works are playful and energetic, closely linking ‘being’ with ‘doing’ and the human ability to perceive, interpret and create. Although Hodge’s painting and collage techniques are not new or experimental, the spiritual way he approaches the creation of his works and the emotion-based response it conjures in the viewer is (in my opinion) new and becoming a very common approach to making and viewing contemporary art. "

"Twenty six photographs of mother and daughter (a singular image repeated 26 times) are developed as a composite of forms through collage. The focus is on revealing (through a kind of compulsive sense of creating an altered reality) the demonstrative behaviour of a woman ‘imagined’. The mother is adorned with collaged symbols placed as a narrative in each image to represent an ‘imagined’ state. Each symbolic ‘alteration’ is built up and extended leading to the bifurcation of the mother. The narrative is extended to the viewer by the various items which the mother carries under her right arm. The symbols attempt to reflect true and felt effects of a ‘lived’ experience of poignant behaviours conveyed by the mother and transferred to the daughter (from the perspective of the daughter)." Her current work is an investigation into her personal observations of schizophrenia and its language(s). It attempts to articulate the boundaries and unpredictable territories surrounding this solitary and internal experience.

For thirty consecutive days, during the Tibetan lunar month of Saga Dawa, I took some time to adopt the pose that the Buddha laid in when he passed away. I lay on my paper, considered my day, as though it were a lifetime and reflected on how I had lived and whether or not I was prepared for death. Inevitably accepting my lack of preparedness, I took an ink brush or pen in my left hand and traced the line of my body from my feet to my heart. Using that scale I drew a lotus, as though the potential of a day (and a life) could be expressed in this form.
