a universe of small truths
In a universe of small truths Julie Henderson works with drawing assemblage that is immediate, performative and responsive to the spatial conditions it inhabits.
‘things without name / beyond because …’
Vibratory fields of differing mediums, each immediate in its own way (like drawing) are, together and all-at-once, an event; every thing stays as it is while doubling in resonance with every other thing and being re-seen in every moment in every body, and in bodies in company (and possibly doubling again). - excerpt from Not Separate / From Life, floor catalogue, a universe of small truths, Linda Marie Walker, June 2012.
Adelaide-based artist Julie Henderson initially worked as a classical and contemporary dancer. She received her doctorate in Visual Art Practice in 2011 and she is a lecturer in sculpture and installation at the University of South Australia. Performative and experimental in character, her interdisciplinary practice often involves collaboration. The work may be seen as a choreographic process that negotiates the contextual edges between artist/ audience makers and objects. Henderson’s assemblage functions across mediums and like drawing, involves an immediate and sensory probing of spatial and therefore also durational fields. In 2004-2005 Julie Henderson was a recipient of an Anne & Gordon Samstag Scholarship undertaking studies in Glasgow School of Art and a subsequent residency in Lucerne, Switzerland. She has exhibited in Stockholm, Glasgow, Graz, Shanghai, Baguio City Philippines, Loughborough, UK, Melbourne and Adelaide. She was recently selected to participate in Safari 2012 an interdisciplinary exhibition in the harbor area of Sydney coinciding with the biennale.
